David Montgomery’s 1-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted the Detroit Lions to a dramatic 26-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. Montgomery rushed for 91 yards, while his backfield mate Jahmyr Gibbs added 40 yards and a touchdown.
With this win, the Lions start their season at 1-0, while the Rams fall to 0-1.
Detroit held the lead for much of the game thanks to Gibbs' running, a 52-yard touchdown reception by Jameson Williams, and two field goals by rookie kicker Jake Bates. Bates’ clutch 32-yarder with 17 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime. Lions quarterback Jared Goff completed 18 of 28 passes for 217 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Although Williams shined, Amon-Ra St. Brown had a quiet night with just three catches for 13 yards.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 317 yards on 34-of-49 passing, including a 9-yard touchdown to Cooper Kupp late in the fourth quarter that briefly put L.A. ahead. Stafford played without star receiver Puka Nacua, who was sidelined with a knee injury.
With the game tied at 20, Montgomery's decisive 1-yard plunge in overtime secured the win for the Lions.
**Overtime Rules Recap:**
- Each team must have a possession, unless the first team on offense scores a touchdown.
- A field goal does not end the game; play continues.
- Sudden death applies once any score (safety, field goal, or touchdown) occurs.
- If the game remains tied at the end of the overtime period, it is recorded as a tie.
