The Miami-Dade Police Department has placed an officer on administrative leave following the brief detention of Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill before the season opener.

Early Sunday morning, just hours before kickoff, Hill was detained for a short period due to a traffic incident, according to a statement from the team. Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels announced that an internal investigation is underway and one of the officers involved has been reassigned to administrative duties. Additionally, another Dolphins player reported being handcuffed while attempting to address the situation with officers on the scene.

Daniels commented, “In response to the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review. One officer has been placed on administrative duties while we conduct our investigation. I am committed to maintaining transparency and accountability in all situations involving our officers.”

Despite the pregame disturbance, Hill had a memorable start to the 2024-25 season. After being released, he helped lead the Dolphins to a dramatic 20-17 comeback win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, celebrating with a “handcuffs” gesture after scoring a crucial touchdown.

Following the game, Hill expressed confusion over the incident, stating, “I wasn’t disrespectful—I didn’t curse or act out. I’m still trying to figure out what happened.”

Hill, a standout wide receiver who led the NFL in receiving yards last season with 1,799 and added 13 touchdowns, made a significant impact during the game. He caught seven passes for 130 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter. The Dolphins secured the victory with a 52-yard field goal from Jason Sanders as time expired, overcoming an early 14-0 deficit.
